Maps were originally drawn or printed on paper or canvas and either rolled or folded for storage, with the latter far more common for everyday navigation by foot or car. As a flat rectangle doesn’t suggest much visually, and the globe is sometimes used to indicate other things, a folded or otherwise sectioned paper is often used to represent a mapping app or service.
Digital maps often use paper and real-world analogues like pushpins and street signs.
